In 2014 Harvard Medical School released one of the most ground breaking studies in history about the brain. They scanned the brains of patients undergoing an 8-week meditation program. The subjects did meditation & mindfulness activities for just 27 minutes a day; what researchers discovered will shock you. The gray matter, which is neurons and cells in the brain and spinal cord, increased in areas while learning, memory, self-awareness, compassion, and introspection is heavily developed. Gray matter decreased in the Amygdala which created less stress, fear and anxiety. Gray matter contains most of the brain’s neuronal cell bodies. The gray matter also activated in regions of the brain involved in muscle control, sensory perception such as seeing and hearing, memory, speech, decision making, and self-control. Never before has the science community uncovered such clear evidence that mindfulness and meditation directly impact the brain in such profound ways.
